Originally from a rural area in Louisiana, EJ spoke about how growing up in a small town shaped his musical foundation. “When you grow up in a small area, you’re the musician, you’re the singer, you’re the choir director—you’re everything,” he said. This all-hands-on-deck environment taught him to write, play, and produce from a young age.
EJ shared that Mercy Endures was written over a decade ago but wasn’t released until now because he didn’t feel ready for it. “It wasn’t ready at the time for me. I wasn’t ready for the song,” he explained. Erica responded with encouragement, noting how God often gives us gifts or messages that we must grow into before sharing with the world.
With skills on the piano, guitar, and drums, EJ said his instrumental talent plays a major role in his songwriting. “I don’t know if I could write if I didn’t play an instrument,” he admitted. “Playing allows me to create melodies I’ve never heard before. Once I have the melody, God just downloads the lyrics.”
