On a recent episode of Get Up Mornings with Erica Campbell, listeners got a double dose of insight and information as Erica sat down with Judge Melodee Armstrong to talk about two hot topics: the recent arrest of Karmelo Anthony in Texas and the growing concern over rising tariffs.

Judge Armstrong, who is based near Collin County where Anthony was arrested, broke down where things currently stand with his case. “Let’s remember, when someone is arrested, they go before a magistrate judge within the first 48 hours,” she explained. “That’s when charges are read and bail is set. But this isn’t the punishment phase — the case hasn’t even been presented to a grand jury yet.”

The judge also addressed public outcry over the bail amount, which many felt should have stayed at $1 million. “Bail is supposed to protect the community and ensure the person shows up in court — not serve as punishment,” she said. “This young man has no criminal history. He’s a leader in his community, active in sports, and has strong family ties. He’s not a flight risk.”

Armstrong emphasized that although there’s a bail schedule in Collin County — which often starts at $1 million for murder charges — each case is unique. “We’re all individuals,” she said. “The schedule is just a framework. Judges can and should consider the full picture.”

As if the legal insight wasn’t enough, Judge Armstrong also shared her thoughts on another issue making waves: tariffs. With prices rising on household items — including electronics like the PS5 — listeners wanted to know what could be done.

“These tariffs are shaking up people’s lives,” she said. “Congress originally had the power, but decades ago, they passed laws like the National Emergencies Act that handed much of that authority to the president. So now, administrations use tariff authority as they see fit.”

Judge Armstrong explained that Congress could stop it — they even have an 18-day window to vote against tariff decisions. But in this case, she said, “The House changed the rules and made time stand still. That 18-day clock? It got stuck. So there’s no vote coming.”

She then put the spotlight on voter power: “In the last election, 90 million eligible voters stayed on the couch. If you’re upset about tariffs, it’s time to get off the couch, show up, protest, call your reps. Congress needs to know — November’s coming, and it might be time for that whooping.”
