Erica Campbell kicked off the conversation by introducing VaShawn’s latest release, expressing excitement about how different this track is compared to his previous work. “That’s so different from what we know you to do,” Erica said, to which VaShawn responded, “Right?” He explained that the song aims to inspire and encourage listeners, particularly in light of the chaos and struggles happening in the world. “No matter what they go through, no matter what we see… that God is the greatest. And He will make a way,” he said, emphasizing the hopeful and uplifting message of the song.

After more than 25 years in the gospel music industry, VaShawn continues to be a relevant and impactful figure. Erica asked how he manages to keep his music fresh, to which VaShawn explained his approach: “It’s listening to the sounds of the earth… watching the news, listening to what’s going on, praying, and asking God to give you a sound that can live today, tomorrow.” He emphasized the importance of creating music that remains timeless and speaks to people when they need it most.

VaShawn also shared some exciting news about his new role as president of the Gospel Heritage Foundation. The organization provides training for worship leaders, musicians, singers, and songwriters. “It’s a place for them to come apart before they come apart,” he said, highlighting the importance of self-care for leaders in the gospel music community. He also mentioned the upcoming International Worship and Artist Training Summit, which will take place in early April.

But that’s not all. VaShawn has a big trip ahead—he’s heading to South Africa to perform at Orlando Stadium in Soweto, which holds a staggering 120,000 people. “It’s my first time there,” VaShawn shared, with Erica and guest host Brother Griff offering congratulations. “That’s amazing!” Erica exclaimed. “Congratulations!”

When asked about his views on the next generation of worship leaders, VaShawn noted that the landscape of gospel music has shifted, especially with the rise of online worship. “We have to be aware of the invisible worshiper,” he explained. “A lot of people aren’t going to go back into church, but they still want to worship.” His advice for the new generation? “Learn how to meditate to people’s hearts and not their minds.”
