On a recent episode of Get Up Mornings with Erica Campbell, Dr. Alacia Hackett, former Chief Diversity and Equity Officer for the U.S. Department of Labor, shared valuable insights into the misconceptions surrounding Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) initiatives. Dr. Hackett addressed common misunderstandings about DEIA, particularly the erroneous belief that it solely focuses on Black communities and Black hires.
According to Dr. Hackett, DEIA covers a broad spectrum of marginalized groups, not just Black communities. She emphasized that DEIA initiatives are designed to serve various demographic groups, including women, veterans, youth involved in the justice system, people with disabilities, and returning citizens. She stressed that the focus is on providing opportunities for individuals from underrepresented communities across the board, not exclusively on race or ethnicity.

Erica Campbell asked Dr. Hackett about the potential impact of the rollback of DEI initiatives. Dr. Hackett explained that the negative consequences of this rollback could be far-reaching, particularly for marginalized communities. She pointed out that statistics show workplaces that reflect the diversity of the communities they serve foster greater trust, leading to more effective operations. Dr. Hackett expressed concern that without DEI, issues like hazardous work conditions, wage theft, and limited employment training opportunities for high-unemployment communities could worsen. She also emphasized that businesses should consider the data showing how DEIA has positively impacted their bottom lines. When businesses invest in diversity and equity, they tend to see better returns, both socially and financially.

When asked about legal protections that remain in place to prevent workplace discrimination, Dr. Hackett highlighted key laws such as the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Americans with Disabilities Act. She clarified that while executive orders from the current administration may influence policies, they cannot override existing laws designed to protect individuals from discrimination. Dr. Hackett concluded the conversation by drawing a powerful parallel between Jesus’ mission on earth and the fight against oppression. She pointed out that Christ’s presence was a form of protest, challenging both religious and governmental systems of oppression. Dr. Hackett encouraged listeners to look at the whole person, just as Jesus did, and to be mindful of systemic injustices.
