Jonathan McReynolds, the multi-talented, multi-award-winning singer, songwriter, and now author, recently joined Erica Campbell on Get Up!. The conversation delved deep into his latest venture—a book titled Before You Climb Any Higher: Valley Wisdom for Mountain Dreams—which, according to McReynolds, carries a powerful message about humility and faith.

McReynolds shared the core idea behind the book, emphasizing the importance of looking at life’s valleys with a new perspective. While society often celebrates the hustle and grind associated with success, McReynolds urges readers to rethink the idea of “mountain-top” moments. He explained, “We love talking about staying in the studio all night, being on the road, being booked and busy, but the truth is, when you really get up there… it gets cold and thin.” Instead, he encourages us to view the valley—the place where we often feel stuck—as a space of growth, connection, and God’s presence. “That’s where the grass is, where the river is,” McReynolds said, urging people to be humble and return to being a son or daughter of God instead of constantly striving for status.

In a more lighthearted but equally insightful moment, McReynolds shifted gears to discuss his intellectual background. Erica and Get Up! co-host Mr. Griff, highlighted his impressive credentials as a Columbia College alum, a seminary graduate, and a member of Mensa, an organization for those with high IQs. When asked what advice he would give to people feeling overwhelmed by anxiety or the current state of the world, McReynolds shared a profound thought. He acknowledged the complexities of the world but emphasized that faith is crucial during uncertain times. “It’s going to take a childlike faith again,” McReynolds said, explaining that in these trying times, true protection, safety, and provision come from a source beyond human control—God.

Looking forward to 2025, McReynolds expressed excitement about returning to his roots of intimate worship sessions, similar to his Make Room days. “I miss stuff like that,” he shared, hinting that he plans to host small, personal worship gatherings in living rooms. And while McReynolds teased the possibility of new music by the end of the year, he said he’s most excited about being more connected to his spiritual identity. “I’m excited about a year that I get to be more son of God. Yeah, I’m excited about being a little bit more than doing.”

McReynolds also encouraged fans to pre-order his book, which is set to release on February 18th. The book is already gaining attention, with hundreds of pre-orders and praise from Publishers Weekly. He jokingly pointed out how people didn’t expect this from a singer, saying, “Don’t put us in boxes of God.” He continues to break barriers, proving there’s no limit to what you can achieve when you trust in God’s plan.
