Years ago, I was working on a small movie project, and honestly, I was a nervous wreck. I had just had my baby, Zaya, and was feeling self-conscious about my weight—I was hovering around 201 pounds and couldn’t stop thinking about how I’d probably be the biggest person on set. I was venting about it to Heavy D, and yes, I was snacking on chips as I said it. But then Heavy D turned to me and said something that stuck with me: “You’re only gonna go as far as your discipline will take you.”

I try to instill this in my kids too. I tell them that real change takes time—it’s like lifting weights, building habits little by little, day by day. It’s true that no one else can see your self-doubt or the areas where you’re undisciplined, but I believe we can’t let those thoughts take root. The enemy loves to plant seeds of doubt in our minds, so we have to be intentional about the influences we allow around us. We need people who build us up and push us toward growth.
My prayer is that we all work on strengthening our discipline. It takes inner strength, mental strength, and, most importantly, faith in God. I’ve learned that when it’s time for me to fulfill His purpose, He’ll give me the strength to do it. So, I’m going to keep pushing, praying, and fighting because I want to become what He intends for me—not held back by fear, but propelled by faith into what God has promised. If He’s got a plan for me, I want to be ready to walk into it.
