Every now and then, I choose to fast to realign my thoughts and strengthen my discipline. With everything going on—being a mom, participating in church, and working on music—it’s easy to feel scattered. Last week, I decided to embark on a three-day water fast, and even though I’ve done this before, I faced some serious mental battles.

While navigating through the airport, it felt like I was walking through a food paradise. Everywhere I turned, delicious options beckoned. I stayed focused and reminded myself, “Now look at the devil. You know I’m trying to do this for a reason!” This experience was a powerful reminder that the enemy doesn’t take breaks. If you’re just starting or have been fasting for years, know that you’re not alone in facing challenges. The enemy will plant doubts, telling you that reading the Bible is too hard or that you can’t do it. But here’s the truth: the Bible is my manual for life and my weapon against negativity. The enemy knows how powerful we become when we dive into the Word, which is why he throws those lies our way.

Fasting can break down barriers and help us connect more deeply with God. I once heard someone say, “Food is for me, but fasting is for God,” and that resonates with me. We often focus on what we want from God—help, guidance, blessings—but what about what we can offer Him? Surrendering and sacrificing for God strengthens our relationship and enriches our lives in unexpected ways.

Temptations can arise when you’re fasting. Picture this: you’re in the middle of your fast, and everyone is inviting you out to dinner, especially when it’s your favorite chef cooking! I’ve been there, and it can be tough. But reminding yourself that this fast is about building your spirit makes it easier to resist.

If you’re considering fasting or are already doing it, take care of yourself, especially if you have health concerns. Fasting has numerous benefits for both the body and spirit. Trust me, it’s worth it!

That’s my Erica-ism for today. I made it through, and I hope you do too. On this marvelous Monday, let’s keep pushing forward!
